a Balance: Integrating Group Activities with Lectures" Teaching faculty and staff are invited to a pedagogical luncheon from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, in the Prairie-Rose Room of the Memorial Union for enhancing student learning and comradeship among teachers. This will be a wonderful opportunity to meet people from different colleges, get ideas, and collaborate interdisciplinary projects. A buffet lunch will begin at 12:15 p.m. If you are planning to attend the session, please register before 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, by replying to this e-mail. Marc Anderson, assistant professor of Biological Sciences will lead the session. He plans to discuss utilization of cooperative learning activities to enhance understanding of concepts in Botany 380, Plant Physiology. He is working to find the most effective balance in 1) the amount of class time dedicated to group activities relative to lectures, 2) the duration of each exercise, and 3) the amount of background provided before introducing a problem. He will describe examples from his course, and give his perspectives as well as those from students. The Faculty Institute
for Excellence in Learning (FIEL) is sponsoring this event with a grant
from the Bush Foundation to promote active learning in classrooms. For
