"Totally PBL - Totally NUTS?"

Teaching faculty and staff are invited to a pedagogical luncheon from noon
to 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 5, in the Prairie-Rose Room of the Memorial
Union for enhancing student learning and comradeship among teachers. This
will be a wonderful opportunity to meet people from different colleges, get
ideas, and collaborate interdisciplinary projects. A buffet lunch will
begin at 11:45 a.m. If you are planning to attend the session, please
register before 2 p.m. on Friday, January 31, by replying to this e-mail.

Wayne Reitz, assistant professor of Mechanical Engineering will lead the
session on "Totally PBL - Totally NUTS?" A year ago, Wayne experimented
with PBL on a small scale in one of his courses. Last fall, he modified
the course to incorporate PBL 100%. Several interesting things occurred and
these will be shared at the luncheon. Discussion topics include (but are
not limited to) grading, group dynamics, end-of-semester instructor ratings,
rubrics. This dialogue should assist the audience in determining pitfalls
and zeniths regarding changes in course format.

The Faculty Institute for Excellence in Learning (FIEL) is sponsoring this
event with a grant from the Bush Foundation to promote active learning in
classrooms. For more details, you may visit
