Pedagogical Luncheon on PBL Set for April 18 Teaching faculty and staff are invited to a pedagogical luncheon from 12:00 to 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, in the Prairie-Rose Room in the Memorial Union. Don Miller, professor and chair of pharmacy practice department will lead the session on "Variations on Problem-Based Learning in the Health Sciences." Problem-based learning (PBL) has a long history of use in medicine and allied health sciences. This presentation will use a videotape to illustrate the classic PBL approach and then review simplifications that have been used in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. The variations used have been effective in preserving the active learning approach to pharmacy education while avoiding some of the intensive use of resources required with classic PBL. Those attending the luncheon will be engaged in a discussion related to problem-based learning. If you are planning to attend the session, please register by calling me at 1-8671 or by replying to this e-mail by Friday, April 13. A buffet luncheon will begin at 11:45 AM. The Faculty Institute for Excellence in Learning (FIEL) is sponsoring this event with a grant from the Bush Foundation to promote active learning in classrooms.
