Engaging a Large, Reluctant Class

Teaching faculty and staff are invited to a pedagogical luncheon from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 19, in the Prairie-Rose Room in the Memorial Union for enhancing student learning and comradeship among teachers.  Craig Rottman, associate professor of physics will lead the session on "Engaging a Large, Reluctant Class."  Please note that the deadline for registration is Thursday, February 14.

Experiences in large, introductory classes are commonly a challenge for the instructor, since the students may not be particularly interested in the material and because of the wide variation in how much of the material various students have seen before.  The speaker will share some of his experiences in teaching such a large class (yearlong algebra-based physics sequence).  He will also engage the participants to explore similar issues that might apply in their teaching experiences.

If you are planning to attend the session, please register before Thursday, February 14, by calling Mary Stoa at 1-8671 or replying to this e-mail. A buffet luncheon will begin at 12:15 p.m.

The Faculty Institute for Excellence in Learning (FIEL) is sponsoring this event with a grant from the Bush Foundation to promote active learning in classrooms.
