Quizzes in HIST

There are no major exams. Instead we have a quiz covering each lecture, along with readings associated with the lecture. The quizzes are administered in-class on the class day immediately following the conclusion of the lecture. They take only a few minutes to complete. The quizzes · Are usually multiple-choice (one or two may be short essay), with each question counting 2 points · Are administered via PRS (personal response system) · Vary as to the number of questions, from seven to twelve (since some lectures cover more material than others) Total points possible on the quizzes: 300 (1/2 the total points possible in the course) The multiple-choice questions on the quizzes · Are not trick questions · Never include those nasty “none of these” or “all of these” answers · Require you to choose the correct answer from among four possible answers The final quiz is given during the final exam period scheduled for the course. During this same period you also can make up one quiz that you may have missed during the semester. Forgiveness policy: your lowest quiz grade will be topped up to full (100%) credit. If you miss a quiz, and thus receive a 0 for it, then that grade will be topped up. We do this in order to allow for unavoidable absence while at the same time discouraging excessive make-up requests. There will be no make-up quizzes except for the one allowed during the final exam period. There will be no quizzes given early. Policies of scholastic honesty, of course, apply to the administration of quizzes in this course. Bring your PRS unit to class every day, whether or not a quiz is scheduled. On every quiz day, be sure you also have with you a blue or black pen, in case the quiz is short essay in format. Scores on quizzes will be posted to Blackboard. PRS (Personal
Response System) Buy your PRS unit at the Varsity Mart (bookstore). As mentioned above, bring your PRS unit with you to class every day. Go into Blackboard, locate this course, and register your PRS unit for use in the course. See ITS instructions here. Quizzes will be presented to you as PowerPoint slides. You read the questions and answers from the screen and record your answers using your PRS unit. If you forget to bring your PRS unit to class – see make-up policy below. Make-Up
Quizzes
As stated above, in addition to having one quiz score topped up to 100%, you also are allowed to take one make-up quiz – during the final exam period scheduled for the course, and at no other time. In order to receive a make-up during the final exam period, you must request it, by email message to the graduate assistant, by noon on the last scheduled meeting day for the class. You cannot make up an exam you already have taken, only one you have missed and for which you received a 0. No quizzes will be given early! Don't even ask! |
