Coccoid Algae from the Lakes of the Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge, ND.
Part I - The Winter Isolates
We have critically examined 51 isolates of coccoid algae isolated from winter phytoplankton samples. Many of these isolates came from under nearly 1 m of ice, with only a few cm of liquid water present. Water temperatures were consistently less than 1 C.
18 different 18S rDNA genotypes have been identified from these 51 isolates. 3 genotypes are Chlorophyceae, 2 are Eustigmatophyceae, and 13 are Trebouxiophyceae. The different genotypes and the corresponding isolates are listed below. As we prepare the information on each genotype, we will create a link with this table.

Isolates come from several different Arrowwood sites, including the north end of Arrowwood Lake (AN), the south end of Arrowwood Lake (AS), the James River as it enters Arrowwood Lake at the north end (ANR), the south end of Jim Lake (JL), and the south end of Mud Lake (MDL). We have also prepared a table of isolates of each genotype by site.
We will be constantly updating this list as more isolates are examined. A list of isolates from spring, summer, and fall will also be available in the future.
Some of our results from this study are presented in the publication: "Diversity of coccoid algae in shallow lakes during winter", published in Phycologia 39:498-506 (2000).
