Notes on Tow 9/21 T-1w
7/20/01
culture started 7/6/01
Planktosphaeria. Cells in large groups in thin mucilage. Cup-shaped plastids with pyrenoids.
The cells look very much like Scenedesmus cells.
When originally isolated on agar, zoospores were seen in this culture as well as Tow 9/21 T-2w.
However, none were seen in either culture when grown in liquid. Hindak (1984) discusses at length
the sporatic nature of zoospore formation in Planktosphaeria gelatinosa. It may be necessary to
grow this alga on agar to regularly see zoospore production.
