Assignment Five: The Details and Specifications for Accessing the Raised Platform (Steps and a Ramp) and a Pergola

bullet Assigned: October 16th at 9:00 am
bullet Due: October 25th at 10:00 am at beginning of class
(Discussion to follow)

Introduction:  The purpose of this assignment is for you to continue with and/or "revise" the previous site layout, grading, and materials development.  Your assignment is to prepare a construction package that a contractor would use to construct a raised platform and pergola for outdoor discussion and relaxation.  The pergola should be designed to provide shade on the raised platform in the hottest months of the year.  It is not intended to provide protection for rain and snow - shade only.  The drawing package should be a complete documentation on how you feel these elements should be designed and detailed with the previously designed plaza and site elements (this will be an excellent time to revise your previous solutions to accommodate ADA compliant steps and ramps throughout the plaza area.  This will also be a good point to determine locations for any future benches, raised planters, and lighting assignments.  As with assignments one through four this design will be used as part of the final NDSU Downtown landscape construction package.  Your steps and ramp(s) as they are designed must provide barrier-free access to the new seating areas and the platform as well as future adjacent paths or sidewalks.

Description:  Your client has requested a platform and pergola system along with steps/ramp that will not be destroyed by heavy usage, hush climatic conditions, or vandalism. The solution must be pleasing and functional to the entire plaza area. The NDSU is very concerned that positive handicapped access be provided within the plaza area and the overall landscape - especially those meeting ADA standards.  The designed areas and details from assignment one through four (and as revised) will be used as the base for the platform, steps, ramp, and pergola system. The steps and ramp should resolve the level change between the plaza level and the platform level. The drawings and specifications prepared in assignments 2 through 4 should also be combined into one package with this assignment and handed-in with your new graphics and specifications.

Material Pallet:  The platform, steps, ramp(s), and pergola system must have appropriate railings and tread/riser ratios along with ADA acceptable slopes, width, and turning radii on the actual ramping system.  All exterior graded wood products (substructures do not need to be the same material as the finished surfaces – decking, rails, fascia, trellis members, etc.; Concrete ready mix to 3000 psi; a concrete finishing material (color choice by designers); #4 reinforcing rods; schedule 40 steel (if used); primer and charcoal gray paint (if needed); granite/slate/concrete interlocking pavers/etc.; a sealer for the pavers and exposed redwood/wood surfaces; a Class 5 gravel (subbase); 1-1/2" minus gravel (as mulch under the platform), sand a paver cushion, filter fabric under the seatwall and pavers; galvanized/stainless steel nails or screws; and galvanized/stainless steel fasteners and hangers. Additional materials may be added as needed to complete your overall design.

Dimensions:

bullet Steps: Minimum width must meet ADA Standards.
bullet Handicapped Accessible Ramps: Minimum width must meet ADA Standards including turns and change in direction.
bullet Steps: Step riser must not exceed maximum allowed in ADA Standards.  The maximum stair tread is open, but it must be comfortable to moving up the steps and within code compliance.
bullet Ramps: Acceptable ADA ratios the for ramping system.
bullet Pergola: Height and density of shade as determined by designer

Presentation:

This assignments requires a series of details needed to construct level changes within the site area.  I would suggest a detailed section of your steps as well as a section of the ramping required as part of your design solution.  I would also encourage an enlarged plan to reference details.

Try 12" x 18" (not 11" x 17" half-scale plotted or printer for drawings with 8-1/2" x 11" for specifications - our North Quonset 11x17 printers will accept B sized sheets.  An indication of the half-scale sheets must be shown on each drawing sheet including the following note:  "For review only -- not for Construction"

The specifications must be word-processed with a cover sheet including within a title block area: A PROJECT TITLE, your name, assignment five, LA 441: Site Development and Detailing, and Fall 2002.   The specifications must reflect the work to be performed by individual specification section for each work area.

Evaluation: 15 Points Total

bullet 10 pts for drawing detailing
bullet 3 pts for specifications
bullet 2 pts graphics and clarity
