Detailing Assignment Three: Details and Specifications for a Bus Stop Seatwall.

Assigned: Monday, September 16th
Due: Friday, September 20th, beginning of class
Discuss: Friday, September 20th

Introduction:
The purpose of this detailing assignment is for you to prepare a construction package for a seatwall or planter.  Design and detail a simple 1'4" to 1'6" seatwall that will be used to wait for a bus or ride.  The seatwall will become part of the larger construction package but should be integrated into your plaza - revise your plaza plan if necessary.  Your details and specification documents should be a complete documentation of how you feel the seatwall and pavement should be part of the new plaza.  Your design should careful consider the materials that will be used within the plaza.  The style or pattern for the wall is open in this assignment.  The color should be workable with the surrounding area in which the seatwall is placed.

The below sketch details are included as pre-cast wall section details for reference only, but may act as a beginning point for your construction package.

Description:
NDSU has requested a wall section detail along with specifications which will provide a durable, cold weather design solution.  They have requested a solution and material that will not be destroyed by vandalism or poor maintenance.  As designers you should consider how the walls will be visually pleasing and integrated into the plaza area.  The client over and over again has complained about the lack of material sensitivity with historic character of the Northern School Supply's building materials.

Material Pallet: Retaining wall system, a finishing material and pattern by designers, reinforcing rods and/or dowels as required by manufacturer, granular sub-base, sealer, and misc.

Dimensions:  All seating areas to work within the site plan as drawn on the preliminary site plan - you may change your preliminary site design to work the seatwall into the solution.

Presentation:
This is an individual project for the design of your wall system with a collective effort to make the larger area come together.  It is acceptable (actually encouraged) that the specification section be prepared as a group or in a team using Microsoft’s Word and Excel 2000.  A 8-1/2" x 11" sheet format for your specifications and 11x17 format for your AcadCAD 2000 or 2002 drawing formats. The specifications must be word processed with a cover sheet including:

NOTE: All of your assignments will require both specifications and drawings. You should think of this presentation packet as the documents that would be given to the contractor to construct the wall system without additional comments by the designer.
