Assignment Two:

Preliminary Working Site Plan.

Assigned: Wednesday, September 4th
Due: Friday, September 13th, beginning of class
Discuss: Friday, September 13th

Introduction:

The purpose of the second detailing assignment is for you to prepare a preliminary design development site plan for a plaza at NDSU Downtown.   This site plan will used to begin the construction package for the plaza for the reminder of the semester.  The site plan as prepared over the next week will need to implement the program elements and client concerns as listed below.

The plaza will need to work carefully with the building's interior renovations.  The new east entry and heavy timber pergola will need to become part of your overall design solution.

Description:

The engineer's site plan is hopefully available to all class members.  It is available at the LA 441 Blackboard site if you do not have it from the server site.

The following program elements should be part of your preliminary site plan:

Building arrival including bus stop for two city buses and barrier-free access
Two 36 foot flagpoles
A large plaza area - hardscape
A lawn Area - softscape
Shade from plantings
Connection to the east parking lot (further parking ramp access)
Exterior seating for outdoor class discussions - size open
Exterior construction demonstration areas - spaces provide to demonstrate pavement design and platform/trellis designs
Demonstration gardens - raised planters and massing planting beds
Two sculpture display pedestals
NDSU Downtown sign
Plaza lighting
We will work as a class to determine additional spatial requirements.

NDSU officials have requested that the plaza area provide a durable, cold weather surface that will not be destroyed by day to day use or vandalism.  As designers you should consider how the plaza areas will be visually pleasing as well as functional to our region.  It is expected you will prepare a unique plaza as part of your design solution before beginning construction documents.

There are many alternatives to the current solutions, so be creative in this second assignment.  Your solution will be the framework for the remainder of the semester, so be accurate with your sizes and dimensions.  Changes will be allowed to implement needed changes to your design throughout the semester.
