North Dakota Federation of Music Clubs Fall Board Meeting - September 19, 1998

Members Present: Marge Johnson, Jan Stoffel, Pat Sondrall, Laurie Gunderson, Mary Christine Larson, Charlene Knoll, Barbara Roberts, Eleanor Johnson, Sharon Wesbrook, Donna Koppenhaver, Doris Lambie, Kris Brugamyer, Odee Maier, Carolyn Nelson, Bette Hildebrand, Brenda Brown, Joanne Schlanser

Excused Absence: Dolores Loberg, Della Heid, Susan Clambey, Jeannine Orke, Eloise Halvorson

President Carolyn Nelson called the meeting to order. The meeting begin with the Pledge of Allegiance and the Federation Collect.

Carolyn reported 30 people represented North Dakota at the National Convention. North Dakota won several awards. Odee Maier reported that North Dakota students did an outstanding job in whatever area they competed in. Sarala Nagala, Oakes, ND was a winner in her competition and Christy Morlock was runner-up in division.

Carolyn requested that a minutes auditor be appointed for State Board Meetings. Board members approved the appointment of Sharon Wesbrook for that position.

Odee Maier reviewed the treasurer’s report. She noted that new North Dakota note cards and stationery are available. The balance of hand on 9/15/98 was $12,934.10 in the general budget and the Gay King Fund had a balance of $11,269.71. The treasurer’s report was approved as moved by Odee and seconded by Pat Sondrall.

Carolyn Nelson reviewed correspondence, news articles, letters, etc. Eleanor Johnson suggested that we start a North Dakota Centennial scrapbook that would contain pictures of IMC events, Barbara Irish’ visit, etc. Members agreed.

 Reports from executive committees, senior clubs and other committee were received. Copies are attached to the master copy of these minutes.

Marge Johnson moved/Pat Sondrall seconded election of Doris Lambie to the National Board...motion carried. Donna Koppenhaver moved/Charlene Knoll seconded a nomination for Odee Maier as National Member at large...motion carried. National Committee openings include; president and first-vice president.

Ouida Keck, NFMC representative will be invited to attend the 1999 Convention at Williston slated for June 14-16, 1999.

Board members were asked to be sure to notify Chaplains of deaths of any member.

Pat Sondrall noted that we have the honor of having the oldest member in the nation; Katherine Follett, Fargo, 109 years old.

 

Odee Maier, National Membership Chair, reported that membership kits are being assembled. The kits contain; state brochures, local brochures, and 4 membership cards. Ideas to explore are; types of members needed (teachers, seniors, etc.); parents of students, Trollwood volunteers; and supporters, as well as musicians. She also suggested using T-V coverage for the Junior Festival as a means of community awareness.

Mary Christine Larson reported that time, as well as performing time can be counted in "music outreach." She also stated that the national office only wants the filled-in forms...no other information should be sent to them.

Ouida Keck, NFMC President, has appointed Gordon Maier National Investment Committee Chair.

Members discussed re-allocation of Junior Festival students because of the large numbers involved and conflicts associated with those numbers. Festival chairs will work with rural people to combine groups. Barbara Roberts moved/Kris Brugamyer seconded that a letter be drafted from the State Board to split Mandan/Bismarck Junior Festival, commencing this year for the 1999 Festival...Odee seconded...motion carried.

Marge Johnson moved/Odee Maier seconded to raise Junior Festival fees to $6.50 and Gold Cups fees to $2.50...carried. Odee Maier moved/Jan Stoffel seconded that local clubs may add additional fees for scholarships...motion carried.

Barbara Roberts, Kris Brugamyer and Pat Sondrall were nominated to serve on the 1999 nominating committee. Odee Maier moved nominations cease and that the secretary cast a unanimous ballot...motion carried. Deadline for new officer candidates is June 14, 1999.

Carolyn Nelson will name the budget committee, which should include 2 appointed members and the treasurer. The budget will voted on at the state convention.

Federation Days are scheduled for the 4th Friday in July. Cookies and punch is usually served. A rotation schedule for hosting IMC exists.

Members also proposed a convention rotation by region rather than by club; SE Region, NW Region, SW Region and NE Region. Regional Vice Presidents should confer with one another regarding the regions and decide which club from their division would host the convention.

NFMC President, Ouida Keck will attend the convention at Williston. Odee or Carolyn will contact Mr. Henderson to see what is available. Expenses plus $300 are paid to a young artist. The Convention State Board Dinner will be at the Faith UMC church at 6:30 p.m., the board meeting will follow.

Odee continues to work on the new logo kits.

Members agreed that the float trophy won by North Dakota at the national convention should travel throughout the state and end up at the IMC with a picture of Agnes Jardine. The float was entered in the historical unit and promoted the presidency of Agnes Jardine, Past National President. Agnes’ granddaughter rode in the parade. ND members who attended the convention were attired in white pants and navy T-shirts with North Dakota and gold stars spread across the bodice. A $100 cash prize was awarded North Dakota, along with the trophy.

North Dakota Music Clubs received many recognition certificates. A list is available on the Internet Site, www.nelsonnotes.com. Members should to be proud of awards/certificates received and let local club members know of them.
