MATH 103- College Algebra, Fall 2002

Math 103 does NOT satisfy any University General Education requirements.  You need to take Math 104 or Math 146 or higher for that requirement.  This course is intended for students who will need to take one of the calculus sequences.
This course is required for Math 105, Math 146 and Math 327.  Other options for Math 327 are Math 146 or Math 165.
You must have Math 102 (or its equivalent) or an appropriate placement test score to be enrolled in this course.  All prerequisites are checked.

Required materials:
Text: College Algebra by Hass and Taylor, 2002 edition, a softbound book.  All handin assignments are in this book and will be extracted when due.  This is not a resellable text and is used only in Math 103.

Calculator: A graphing calculator is required for this course.  The TI-86, TI-83+ or TI-89 are recommended.  The TI-86 or TI83+ will be used in class demonstrations. If you already have a different model, check with Mrs. Nelson to see if it will be suitable for this course.

3 Examination booklets: large size 10 7/8" by 8 ¼", 8 pages (available at the Varsity Mart)

Evaluation procedures are set up by the math department and apply to all students taking Math 103.
30% in-class assignments, homework, quizzes and a group project
50% 3 exams given outside of class,in the evening
20% common final exam
It is the policy of the department not to return final exams for Math 103.

In order to guarantee a particular grade, consider A= 90%, B= 80%, C= 70%, D= 60%, below 60% is failing.  You should not expect any "curving" of grades or a grade based on your performance in your individual section of M103.  Extra credit points may be earned by doing extra assignments. Graded assignments and extra credit projects will be announced in class, and posted. The time and place of the common exams will be announced in class and posted. Any conflict concerning an exam must be cleared IN ADVANCE of the exam time. If classes are cancelled on the day of an exam, the exam will be given on the next class day. A 10% PENALTY will be assessed on any exam taken late, without Mrs. Nelson’s prior approval. All make-up exams must be taken within ONE WEEK of the original exam. Any corrections in grading must be reported before the next exam. In order to succeed in M105, M146, M160 or M327, you should get at least a "C" in this course.

The course description includes linear, polynomial, rational, radical, exponential and logarithmic functions; graphs of functions and modeling and problem solving.  The goals of the course are to understand the basic algebraic tools and problem-solving skills necessary for success in the study of calculus.  In conjunction with Math 105, this course is intended as part of a precalculus sequence.

ADA Notice: Any students with disabilities or other special needs, who need special accommodations in the course, are invited to share these concerns with the instructor as soon as possible.
