About the conference

Each spring the region's communication students and scholars come to Fargo for an opportunity to share their work and their enthusiasm at the Red River Student Communication Conference. For two days North Dakota State University's communication department welcomes the best communication students for paper presentations, panels and sessions, culminating in a keynote speech by a nationally-renowned communication scholar and teacher.

About the speaker

Sonja K. Foss' areas of specialty in research and teaching are contemporary rhetorical theory and rhetorical criticism. She is the author or co-author of two books in this area--Rhetorical Criticism and Contemporary Perspectives on Rhetoric. She has developed two specialties in theory and criticis--study of the visual image as rhetoric and application of feminist perspectives on communication. Dr. Foss' work on visual images has included essays on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party, visual argumentation, and body art. Her work on feminist perspectives on communication includes the books Women Speak and Feminist Rhetorical Theories, and essays on such topics as the construction of feminine spectatorship in Garrison Keillor's monologues and sewing as an emancipatory ritual.

Dr. Foss holds a B.A. in romance languages and an M.A. in speech from the University of Oregon, and a Ph.D. in communication studies from Northwestern University. She has taught at numerous universities, including Virginia Tech, Norfolk State University, the University of Denver, the University of Oregon, the University of Georgia, and Ohio State University. She is currently the chair of and a professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Colorado.

Call for papers and participants

Anyone can attend any session during the conference. A conference registration fee of $15 covers participation in any sessions, morning and afternoon refreshments, and a conference luncheon on Tuesday, April 25. If you're interested in how communication can influence society, why not come to one or all conference sessions? Better yet, why not submit a student paper or panel idea? Papers in all fields of communication are encouraged. Simply submit a paper to the conference committee, or submit a panel idea by sending the panel title along with names and short biographies of presenters.
