| Today
we toured a dairy farm owned by M. and Mme Lambert. The farm has
been in production since 1705 and currently has only 26 head of dairy
cattle.

They milk twice a day and feed their
cattle by means of rotation grazing and some hay. All the animals are AI with a cost of 35 E for two straws of semen. Once calves get to be two weeks old they are sold on the market for an average price of 350E/head. Annual turn over rate is 5% however, the average cow's production life span is about 10 years. It was amazing to see how a small operation can be profitable when it develops a specialized nice in the market. The fact that it is integrated in all areas of the Dairy Industry makes this a great place to visit and gave students many ideas on making farms more efficient. |

It is unique in the
fact that it produces its own milk, butter, yogurt and cheese on the
farm and sells it straight to the consumers rather than super markets. |
