Today is a very sunny and beautiful day.  We started our weekend journey back in time.  We are going to visit Omaha Beach, the American War Cemetery, Mount Saint Michael, and many other places, but our first stop was Caen and the War Memorial.

Walk through the War Memorial brought many emotions such as pride, anger, respect, happiness, and deep sadness.

Pride at the accomplishments of so many brave people, anger at many individuals utter hatred and disrespect for life.

Hanging
Out of everything we say, the thing that seems to stay in our memory the most is a picture of a young boy and girl, no more than 17. The girl had been hung for resistance, and was just hanging there dead; the boy just being prepared for the same fate. They died for what they believed.

Crosses we viewed later at the American War Cemetery

Being able to tour the war memorial first allowed us to be able to imagine what it was like on Omaha Beach during times of battle.
Respect for everyone in a war and their willingness to give their lives for freedom and profound sadness at the suffering inhumanity, hatred, fear, and lives cut too short.
battle
There are no words to express how it is to stand where so many had fought and died; it was very surreal.
We are very pleased that we have never had to make such a choice. But if the time comes and we are faced with such a decision, we can only hope we do it with as much courage as those who have gone before us.

We give a heartfelt thank you to Annie Sigwalt, ESA, our advisors from the USA, and France for giving us the chance to see this area and we wish everyone could experience a trip as wonderful as this. It will change your outlook on the past and future forever.
