A tour of the Old City - Angers, France
|
Le Chateau
| |
Near
the top is the entrance to the Chateau where you can began a tour
of this wonderful castle. |
|
| |
Gardens
around the Chateau
Water was never around the Chateau; it was dry or planted into gardens.
However, there is a river directly on the other side of the Chateau. |
|
| |

On
the next level you see several gardens, including the Kings own vineyard.
It is said that the vine produced from this vineyard are not the best
even after replanting
with a different variety of grapes.

|
A
castle would not be complete if it did not have a church.
Can you imagine the man power it took to construct such a piece
of architecture. And every castle usually had their own church!

| |
| As
one tours what is considered the "Old City", you notice
different, older, buildings in the part of Angers. Some of the
things you will note in the following pictures will be the use
of wood and stone in the structures, stain glass windows, carvings,
and a mixture of slate and stone. There is one building in Angers
with a mixture of stone and slate that dates back to the third
century; that building being a church of course. |
|
| Having
wood on a building was a status symbol; it meant you were wealthy.
Which floor you lived on also meant something; the higher you
lived, the less impressive your status became. |
