A
city of over 160,000 inhabitants, Angers is rich with lakes, rivers,
and landscaped parks. This pedestrian-friendly city has lush walking
paths, in addition to very effective bus lines. Angers promotes
closes ties between local government, academic and research institutions
and business. There are 30,000 students, 2 universities, 5 colleges,
1,200 researchers and research lecturers.
Most of all, Angers is known for its quality of life. From its abundant flowers, wines, museums, and galleries to its cobbled streets that wind through the Gothic and Renaissance neighborhoods, this is a city that is both medieval and contemporary. While electronics, computer sciences and the automotive industry form the basis of modern business in Angers today, the city’s historic castles, public squares, gardens and waterways create the alluring charm of "the most flowered city in Europe."
This year, we are having students collaborate with one another from different Universities and submit a collection of photos and journal briefly about their daily activities. This will help students get to know one another more quickly and make learning a great deal more interesting, in addition to sharing their activities with you back home. So, be watching for their daily submissions. |
Angers is known for Chateau d' Angers, celebrated by the locals for being the home for Roi René, before the reign of Louis X1. It was a fully moated castle, now with grass and knot gardens in the moat, on the Loire River. It's 17 huge towers dominate any trip into the city and inside are housed the Apocalypse tapestries. These 77 pieces of 12th century tapestry were rescued from the local dump when the previous owner no longer had room for them. They are now restored to their former splendor and open to the public along with the apartments, towers and prisons that lie within.
All of these areas you are seeing are areas the students will be visiting or touring within the next three weeks. As you can see, it is very beautiful and rich in history and culture. |

Angers, the capital of the historic province of Anjou, is considered one of the most beautiful cities in France. Foremost among its many notable structures is the magnificent twin-spiraled Cathedral of Saint Maurice (12th-13th century) and the massive Castle of Angers (early 13th century), with its moat and soaring towers. Angers was once inhabited by fierce Celtic people who tenaciously opposed the Roman penetration. | ||
