Little Country Theatre's Policies

All performances will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. (or at 2 p.m., in the case of matinees). In order not to disturb seated patrons, latecomers will be seated only at a suitable time in the performance. In some cases, this may not occur until intermission.

Cameras, recording devices, food and beverages are prohibited in the theatre. Askanase Hall is a smoke-free facility.

Special Needs Accessibility

Askanase Hall is wheelchair accessible. Special needs parking for theatre patrons is located at the southwest corner of the building. The special needs accessible doorway to Askanase is located at the northeast corner of the building.

Special seating is available for persons in wheelchairs. To make arrangements, call the Division of Fine Arts Box Office at (701) 231-7420.

Assistive listening devices and large print programs are available upon request. Please make your request to the Division of Fine Arts Box Office at least 48 hours before the performance.

We regret that the LCT Box Office is not handicap accessible. Patrons with physical handicaps may reserve their tickets by telephone. These tickets will be available from the ushers upon their arrival at the theatre.

Participating in a Little Country Theatre Production

Auditioning for a Role

Open auditions are held for all Little Country Theatre productions and any NDSU student is welcome to audition. Tri-college students may also audition, but they must register for at least one credit at NDSU if cast in a production. This credit may be Theatre Arts 201, Theatre Practice, section 1.

Auditions are held in Askanase Hall. Audition dates are announced in the NDSU Spectrum and on posters throughout the campus. Play scripts are available for student perusal several weeks before each audition. Perusal scripts may be checked out from the Fine Arts office, room 115, located in the Music Education Building.

Auditions for the 2008 fall productions are:

Beyond Therapy September 2-3
Iphigenia at Aulis September 2-3

Students cast in a role in any Little Country Theatre production may earn one credit hour by signing up for Theatre Arts 201, Theatre Practice, section 1. This class may be added at any time during the semester. See the director of the production for more information.

Other Acting Opportunities

Students enrolled in any of the three directing classes offered by the Department of Theatre Arts are always looking for students to act in their class projects. These projects typically require a commitment of two to four weeks and rehearse four to seven days a week for one hour. If you would be interested in acting in a directing class scene, please notify the directing instructors:

Paul Lifton, Askanase 134, 231-7785
Lori Horvik, Askanase 105, 231-8776

Working Behind the Scenes

Theatre is a collaborative art form needing the work of many artists and craftspersons. Little Country Theatre offers students many opportunities to become involved behind the scenes in working on a production.

Students who work on a crew for any Little Country Theatre production may earn one credit hour by signing up for Theatre Arts 201, Theatre Practice. This class may be added at any time during the semester. See your crew supervisor for more information.

Construction Crews: Construction crews help prepare the scenery, costumes or properties for a production. Their work is done in the weeks preceding the production. While carpentry skills are helpful in working on scenic construction and sewing skills are helpful in doing costume construction, the theatre staff is willing to train interested students.

If you are interested in scenery and/or properties construction, contact:

Mark Spitzer, Technical Director
231-7706

If you are interested in costume construction, contact:

Rooth Varland, Costume Director
231-7788

Running Crews: Running crews help the show run smoothly while it is in production. They may work the light or sound board during the show, shift scenery or properties during scene changes, help actors in and out of costume, or help maintain the costumes during the run of the show. Typically, the running crews begin their work during technical rehearsals, which are held the weekend before the show opens, and continue through the run of the show.

For more information on the shift crew, properties crew, or to work as a light or sound board operator, contact:

Mark Spitzer , Technical Director
231-7706

For more information about working on wardrobe or as a dresser, contact:

Rooth Varland, Costume Director
231-7788

Box Office and Publicity: Students who work in this area may sell tickets, help distribute posters on campus or to area retail stores, or help distribute brochures to theatre patrons or area hotels and motels. The LCT Box Office utilizes the Ticketmaster system, so students working in the box office will gain experience which may be useful in obtaining employment through Ticketmaster or other Ticketmaster outlets. Publicity and box-office work typically begins one to two weeks before a show opens and, in the case of box office workers, continues through the run of the show.

For more information, contact:

Lori Horvik, 231-8776

Earning Academic Credit for Your Work

Students participating in a Little Country Theatre production may earn one credit hour by signing up for Theatre Arts 201, Theatre Practice. This class may be repeated and may be added at any time during the semester.

Theatre Arts 201 is divided into several sections:

  • Section 1 - Acting
  • Section 2 - Stage Manager, Assistant Director
  • Section 3 - Scenic Construction, Shift Crew
  • Section 4 - Costume Construction, Costume Crew
  • Section 5 - Makeup Design
  • Section 6 - Properties Master, Properties Crew
  • Section 7 - Light Board Operator, Lighting Crew

Ushering at a Production

Any interested person may serve as an usher for a Little Country Theatre production. Little Country Theatre urges NDSU student groups to increase their visibility on campus and in the community by reserving a performance for their members to serve as ushers. Ushers are recognized in the LCT programs when sufficient notice has been given of a group's desire to usher for a performance. Ushers see the performance free-of-charge.

Ushers are expected to wear appropriate clothing while ushering. They are required to be at the theatre by 7:00 p.m. on performance nights and to stay through the end of the play.

If you or your group is interested in ushering for a LCT performance, contact:

Lori Horvik, Theatre Department
231-8776
