The most important folk costume of Greece is the men's skirted fustanella, with its 400 tiny pleats. Each pleat is said to signify one year of being under the yoke of the Ottoman Empire. This fustanella is part of the dress uniform of the Evzones, the honor guard stationed at the tomb of the unknowns in Athens. Other elements in the uniform of the Evzones includes: the fez with black tassel, a full-sleeved white shirt, an embroidered vest, white stockings, and red shoes with enormous pompoms.
