Student organizations have played a major role in college life from its inception. Student participation is encouraged at NDSU because it adds to the total educational experience.

Today there are more than 200 recognized organizations on the NDSU campus. In order for an organization to be recognized by the student government, the organization needs to have a constitution, officers, and a faculty advisor.

Women's Athletic Association In 1920, The Women's Athletic Association (WAA) was founded at North Dakota Agricultural College. It was a member of the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW). The aim of the association was to promote athletics and good sportsmanship among the women of the college. Vel Rae Burkholder wore the ivory blazer on the left in 1957 when she was president of the group. The association continued until 1972 when the WAA (and AIAW) became a part of the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA).
