In
1926 Dr. Sidney Gulick developed a Friendship Doll Exchange between Japan
and the United States. The goal was to create friendship between the children
of the two countries. Nearly 13,000 dolls were given to Japan by American
children. Japan presented America with 58 dolls showing the artistry of
their top doll makers and reflecting their belief that a spirit of friendship
is within them.
North Dakota's doll, Miss Okayama,
represents the prefecture of Okayama. After 73 years, Miss Okayama is
in need of repair. The Okayama Chapter of The Japanese-American Cultural
Exchange Society is sponsoring her return to Japan for conservation. Her
return visit will re-kindle the spirit of friendship between Okayama and
North Dakota.
