Charles Dana Gibson, a well-known illustrator of the early 1900's, created the "Gibson Girl" and she became a fashion icon after which many American women modeled themselves.

She was represented as youthful, energetic, and independent. She was dressed in simple and practical, yet elegant clothing.

Her image spurred the popularity of one of the most notable women's fashions of the 1900's, the shirtwaist blouse.

Ruth Roberts Haggert is pictured here wearing a fashion of that time.
