The Ancient Greeks and Romans considered wearing fur to be barbaric and smelly. They used furs only for rugs or furniture coverings.

People in northern climates used fur to provide warmth. This adaptation allowed humans to live in cold areas that would otherwise be uninhabitable.

In recent times furs were associated with wealth and status. Mink was thought to be most prestigious.
