Students in Technology Transfer and Research (STTAR)

The Students in Technology Transfer and Research (STTAR) program places upper division college students with North Dakota firms to address science and technology problems.

To apply for STTAR support, companies complete a brief form indicating how students will make a contribution to company performance, products, or processes using science and technology. Companies pay at least half of the students' salaries.

Student Opportunities

STTAR positions are posted in the Cooperative Education Offices on each of the North Dakota University System campuses. Students should contact their local office to register. If you currently are working for a company, but are not participating in the STTAR program, please ask your supervisor to contact Elizabeth Jung: elizabeth.jung@ndsu.edu or call 701.231.1048.

Student Success Stories

Robert Smette, an Industrial Technology senior was paid to find solutions to science and technology problems identified by North Dakota manufacturing company, PS Doors. Pictured is a working model of an electric gate that raises and lowers automatically that Smette designed and built. Among other projects, Smette helped design a flood shield for steam tunnels.

Sara Johnson, a senior majoring in Food and Nutrition, worked side-by-side with Deb Jenkins, restaurant owner during the summer. She was supported by STTAR funds through the Institute for Business and Industry Development testing ingredients and final products from thirty food processors or restaurants in the state.
