Some Outreach Activities of the Club

1. Marketplace for Kids

This activity includes exhibit of insects and other arthropods at a school to educate elementary students. Interactive sessions with the students are also part of this activity. Marketplace for kids in 2002 was held at Concordia College, Moorhead, MN.

2. College for Kids

College for kids is one activity being participated by the club members that includes multimedia presentations about biology and chemistry. The elementary students visit Entomology department to learn fun science facts and to participate in small group experiments to enhance interest in science.

3. Expanding your Horizons

Expanding your horizons conference is being held on over 120 locations all across the US annually. Girls in grades 7-9 coming from MN, ND, and SD are exposed to different career opportunities available for them after high school. Entomology club volunteers provide career information on entomology to the participants.

4. Creepy Crawly Saturday

This activity showcases live insects like Madagascar hissing cockroach and related arthropods (millipede and tarantula). Insect displays and interactive softwares on computer depicting movements and sounds of insects are also provided. This activity held at Yunker Farm, Fargo, ND provides opportunity for kids to appreciate insects.

5. Eco-Camp

Eco-Camp is a program for elementary students where they play an active role by observing and collecting insects in their natural habitats. This activity is being held at Valley City, ND annually.

6. School Visits

The entomology club, sponsored by Don Carey, brings live insects and insect-related displays to local elementary, junior high, and high schools.  Kids are welcome to participate in these traveling insect "petting zoos."  Email an officer if you are interested in us coming to your school!

7.  Science Fairs

Science fairs provide an exciting learning opportunity for both the participants and the judges.  Members of the entomology club are enthusiastic volunteer judges at school fairs, regional fairs, and the State Science and Engineering Fair.  In 2004, club awards for excellent projects in entomology and biology were given for the first time.
