Distance and Continuing Education FAQ

Mission

The Department of Distance and Continuing Education is an outreach unit at North Dakota State University that makes the resources of the institution available in a variety of traditional and non-traditional ways, including distance-based education. The Department's general mission is to provide opportunities for learning experiences whenever the need for such opportunities has been established by individuals or companies. It provides these opportunities by organizing and coordinating efforts of various university units or contracting agencies. For noncredit activities, Continuing Education also serves as registrar of its efforts and may issue transcripts certifying completion of the activities.

Degree credit courses are available in a variety of formats--online, correspondence, on campus, off campus, interactive video, etc. Admission to the institution, either as degree seeking or "unclassified" student status, is required of all who wish to take degree credit courses. To register online, go to Degree-Eligible Credit.

Courses with numbers 499 and under are considered undergraduate; 500-599 are post-baccalaureate professional courses; and 601-799 are graduate level. The NDSU 600 course number is reserved for professional development courses at the graduate level (these courses, however, are not accepted on programs of study leading to graduate degrees at NDSU).

Non-degree credit courses are generally professional development opportunities, most often for educators. No admission process is necessary to enroll in non-degree credit courses. To register online, go to Professional Development Credit Registration.

Noncredit activities are offered to the general public or are designed specifically for companies or work groups. Topics vary and may be customized to meet individual and organizational needs. Some recent workshop topics include supervision of workers, using the Internet, estate planning, and others. To register online, go to Noncredit Registration.
