This M.Ed. (Science Education) program is designed to provide an enriched foundation in pedagogy, the sciences, and
scientific research to individuals who are already secondary science teachers. The M.Ed. program is aligned with the
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) to
reflect the importance of applied research and content development of educators.
It is important to note that the M.Ed. (Science Education) program is not designed for completion by continuous
residency on campus. Instead, it it focused on providing professional development to in-service teachers, with much of
the coursework provided over summers. Typically, a teacher will require 3 to 4 years for program completion. Most of
the science graduate courses are supported by Title II funds through the NDSU summer MSTeP program, which allows for reduced
tuition costs for students. The Education Core of four courses are made available at times generally convenient to teachers,
and they are offered via IVN statewide.
A final requirement of this M.Ed. (Science Education) program is an oral defense of an action research
project. A thesis option is available for candidates who do not have access to a teaching environment.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: A limited number of graduate tuition waivers in the form of Board of Higher Education
Scholarships may be available to teachers enrolled in the M.Ed. program. Department chairs or advisors must complete
applications for eligible students by the deadline (contact the Graduate School) in order for these students to be
considered for tuition waivers. Applications will not be reviewed after 5 pm on this date. Please consult the
Graduate Bulletin for information and
