MISSION AND HISTORY
The Center for Science and Mathematics Education (CSME) at NDSU:
  1. Provides an infrastructure for the operation of multiple science and mathematics education projects.

  2. Promotes collaboration with other North Dakota institutions to implement a statewide plan for the improvement of undergraduate teacher preparation and graduate professional development for science and mathematics teachers.

  3. Provides opportunities for faculty and students to become involved in K-16 science and mathematics education projects.

  4. Supports the ongoing efforts of individuals, departments, and groups of faculty involved with K-12 activities such as science fairs, Governor's School, math contests, and other science/math functions.

History of the CSME:
  • Establishment of the CSME was approved by the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education on March 19, 1998. Initial support came from the NDSU College of Human Development & Education and the College of Science & Mathematics.

  • Dr. Debra Tomanek served as the first CSME director, with the CSME headquartered in Stevens Hall 224 and 225.

  • Dr. Donald Schwert assumed CSME directorship in June, 2000.

  • The CSME moved to the Katherine Kilbourne Burgum Family Life Center in August, 2002.

  • In January, 2004, the NDSU College of Engineering & Architecture joined the College of Human Development & Education and the College of Science & Mathematics in financial support for the CSME.

  • Educational and research grants administered through the CSME totaled over $4 million in 2004.
