Dr. Gregory J. McCarthy is the Associate Vice President for Interdisciplinary Research at North Dakota State University, and Director of the Center for Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE). CNSE is the largest interdisciplinary research entity at North Dakota State University, with an annual budget of approximately $20,000,000, 65 full-time staff, and 90 NDSU students and faculty, participating in its research programs.
McCarthy earned a B.S. degree in Geology from Boston College in 1964, and a Ph.D. in Solid State Science from The Pennsylvania State University in 1969. He spent the next ten years on the faculty of Penn State's Materials Research Laboratory. His research at Penn State emphasized crystal chemistry and synthesis of ceramic materials, new materials for safe disposal of high-level nuclear wastes, and X-ray powder diffraction.
In 1979 McCarthy moved to NDSU as Professor of Chemistry and Geology and was named Distinguished Professor of Chemistry in 1995. His NDSU research emphasized X-ray analysis of solids, mineralogy, and the reuse or safe disposal of solid industrial wastes. McCarthy has authored or co-authored some 190 papers and book chapters, and edited or co-edited 14 books and two scientific journals. Before assuming his present position, McCarthy served as Director of the North Dakota Water Resources Research Institute for nine years, and Chair of the Department of Chemistry for eight years. He also directed the NDSU Center for Main Group Chemistry.
McCarthy's current assignments as Associate Vice President are to direct the NDSU Center for Nanoscale Science and Engineering, facilitate interdisciplinary research across campus on major Federal and industrial grants and contracts, and promote technology transfer activities. Since assuming this position in March 2001, he has procured and managed more than $100M of Government and industry funding.
