James Clifton was a managing accountant in the private sector for ten years before pursuing a career in academics. In addition to teaching principles, intermediate, and advanced accounting courses, he is owner of a consulting firm in Fargo. He was selected Teacher of the Year for 2000-2001 and serves as co-adviser for the Accounting Club.

He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and a past vice-president/treasurer of Fargo's Downtown Business Association.
