DRESS FOR SUCCESS at a career fair, interview, or on the job

Comments from businesses in the College of Business

woman in red print t-shirt, black tank, jeans, black heals
What is your First Impression?
  • Not an outfit for work or an interview; Looks to be a typical outfit to wear on the weekend
  • This is a great outfit for class or the weekend, but is not appropriate for an interview or career fair; You have one chance to make a first impression - Use it to your advantage!

  • Looks fresh, confident and "herself", which we like to see...natural personality; However, if the event is not specifically described as "casual/jeans” or she accidentally stumbled into the first impression opportunity I would think for her benefit she would put more effort into wearing business attire
  • Very casual, assume she is a student or her day off from work

  • Good look for classroom

  • Very nice looking for a weekend activity

  • Too casual

  • Dressed appropriate for an informal "meet and greet lunch"

Is this appropriate for a Career Fair?

  • We understand that some students will be between classes and stopping by the career fair and try not to over-analyze outfits. However, she will be competing against others wearing more appropriate business attire who may come across as more polished; Puts more emphasis on her to convince us through communication skills that she's a serious candidate for the job
  • Not acceptable to wear to a career fair

  • This is a great outfit for class or the weekend, but is not appropriate for the career fair
  • Too casual for a career fair
  • Student would appear to be just browsing

  • Absolutely not

  • Not looking for a business position

Is this appropriate for an Interview?
  • Definitely not; Would convey that she's not taking the interview seriously
  • Not acceptable to wear to an interview
  • This is a great outfit for class or the weekend, but is not appropriate for an interview
  • Too casual, even for a casual dress company

  • Not appropriate, too casual

  • Way too casual; Not a bit professional looking

  • Much too casual
