North Carolina State University maintains a huge site on assessment that is a valuable resource. Once you learn how to use this site, it may become a favorite for accessing information on a variety of topics.

Topics of interest to many NDSU faculty may include:

  • Assessment Rubrics
  • Classroom Assessment Techniques
  • Definitions of Assessment
  • Ethical Standards for Assessment
  • Glossaries of Assessment Terms
  • Grading (Isn't grading assessment?)
  • National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) data for several universities
  • Portfolio Assessment (Several good references!)
  • A huge list of assessment-related pages from several universities and much more!

An important step in assessment may be re-identification of our learning objectives for our individual students as a step toward identifying the CATs that we might use.  A on-line teaching goals instrument (teaching goals inventory) is available at:
http://www.siue.edu/~deder/assess/catmain.html

After identifying your teaching goals, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville has a great link for quick descriptions of several classroom assessment techniques (CATs).

Many professional organizations provide strong support for assessment of student learning.  The members of the University Assessment Committee have recommended the following link from the Accrediting Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) for the direct comments about assessment. See:

http://www.ce.ufl.edu/abet/Guidelines%20for%20ABET%20Criterion%203.pdf

as one source for the 2004 version.

Mathematics is another discipline for which good information is available.  See the main site at:  http://www.maa.org/saum/index.html  or a collection of resources at:  http://www.maa.org/saum/maanotes49/toc.html .
