U.S. Students Can Get Valuable Work Experience
Abroad
Many majors require internship experience before graduation. Even
students who aren't bound by their curriculum can benefit from practical
work experience in the field before nabbing that first important
job out of college. What better way to learn about the world, gain
real experience, and wow your future employers than by doing an
internship overseas?
Internships
are often unpaid, and seemingly difficult overseas immigration issues can be cause for working for free. It's often easier to earn credit
than cash, although sometimes you can luck out and do both. In either
case, it is important you talk with your study abroad advisor and department chair or academic
advisor if you are looking to complete a degree requirement with your international internship.

The ANAME Engineering Program
at NDSU placed students in manufacturing plants during their
study abroad in Mexico. Placements varied from the Corona
Bottling Plant to small, family-owned enterprises. |
It is also helpful to talk with the NDSU Career Center when writing a resume
that will be scrutinized overseas. More often than not, resumes
or curricula vitae (C.V.'s as they are often called) are not written or reviewed as they
are here in the United States, and that is something to take into
consideration when you are dreaming about a job with the Crocodile
Hunter at the Australian Zoo or Mitsubishi's marketing team in Tokyo.
Some internship
programs offer summer experience, and others allow year-round jobs.
However, combining an internship with
study abroad courses is another attractive option.
Some of NDSU's exchange partners and affiliate providers offer internships either on their own or alongside courses to be studied. You might just be able to strike a balance among the worlds of work, study and play! Please ask your Study Abroad Advisor for more information.
